SINGAPORE, 12 SEPTEMBER 2008 – Public transport provider SBS Transit and communications systems and products provider Andrew have signed a contract that will see the latter upgrade the existing communications infrastructure to support a 3G wireless network along the North-East Line (NEL) in Singapore. The NEL is a fully underground railway line owned and operated by SBS Transit as part of the Lion City’s MRT system..
The project is expected to improve the mobile experience for the NEL’s commuters, by delivering better wireless coverage and reception, as well as greater bandwidth and download speeds for those who use 3G-enabled mobile devices. The current communications infrastructure along the NEL, which was designed and activated by Andrew in 2002, supports only 2G mobile devices.
The project will see Andrew working with IntraWave, the infrastructure service provider for commercial wireless services on the NEL. This infrastructure upgrade will support 3G applications services offered by all three of Singapore’s mobile service providers – SingTel Mobile, Starhub Mobile and MobileOne Network.
