CHINA, 27 JANUARY 2010 - Organisations in the Asia Pacific should be aware of critical changes in the balance of control and power in IT, according to research and advisory firm Gartner. The firm emphasises that enterprises should especially change the way users interact with technology.
According to vice president and Gartner fellow Steve Prentice, it was very evident from the global financial crisis that the world is now a very interconnected place. He noted that if something happens in one part of the world, other parts are bound to be affected.
“While organisations do have choices to make about where, how and when to deploy technology, to do nothing is not a viable choice,” he added.
Social computing
Social computing is in these days and, according to Prentice, organisations should use social and behavioural sciences to better understand the impact of social computing and predict future changes.
Gartner analysts predict Facebook to become the hub for social network integration and Web socialisation by 2012. They also expect that by 2013, mobile phones will overtake PCs as the most common Web access device across the globe.
There will be more interconnections between mobile, social, Web and communications offerings in the months ahead and by 2012, companies will see more mass market opportunities for context-aware computing. The biggest challenge of IT will be to unlock the potential of this major upcoming trend.
Emerging economies
More than three billion people in the world will be able to make electronic transactions by 2014 and by 2012, companies and individuals will have five times more data stored than they did in 2008.
The cloud computing service market will explode in the future and in the months ahead, there will be thousands of smaller providers that depend on agility and standards for interoperability to compete.
Gartner also says that by 2012, 20 per cent of businesses will own no IT assets and India-centric IT services companies will represent 20 per cent of the major cloud aggregators in the market by the same period.
