11 May 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, 11 MAY 2009 – Two Malaysian companies have won awards at the United Nations World Summit Award (WSA) 2009.

Malaysian government agency MDeC (Multimedia Development Corporation) chief executive officer, Dato’ Badlisham Ghazali, said the two winners were Sarawak Information Systems (SAINS) and Les’ Copaque Production.

Badlisham said the WSA Grand Jury convened in New Delhi, India, from April 1 to 8, to select the five most outstanding products in each of the eight categories as the winners. The eight categories consisted of e-Government & Institutions, e-Health & Environment, e-Learning & Education, e-Entertainment & Games, e-Culture & Heritage, e-Science & Technology, e-Business & Commerce and e-Inclusion & Participation.

The World Summit Award (WSA) is a global initiative to select and promote the world's best e-Content and innovative ICT applications. WSA was started in 2003 in the framework of the United Nations' World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) as a contribution of the Austrian government to the global effort to bridge the digital divide and close the content gap. WSA activities include national contests and selections of best practice, a global contest held every two years and content-focused national and international conferences with exhibitions— the WSA Road Show.

Twenty thousand nominations

Badlisham said five winners of the recently-held MSC Malaysia APICTA 2008 were nominated to compete in the fourth edition of WSA, which received 20,000 nominations from 157 countries.

He said the two Malaysian companies won in the following categories:

•    SAINS was named the best entry for the e-Government and Institutions category for its Integrated Court Systems (ICS), which is an end-to-end solution to manage large case loads of the Malaysian Law Courts and the legal community.

•    Les’ Copaque received Regional Special Mentions for Asia in the e-Entertainment & Games category for its 3D animation movie named ‘Geng: The Adventure Begins’.

Badlisham said the awards were yet another testimony that Malaysia produces world-class content and solutions that are credible. “This will boost confidence in MSC (Multimedia Supercorridor) Malaysia products and solutions as well as inspire other companies to strive for the best.”
