Singapore's National Metrology Centre (NMC) unveiled a new project called Measurement Assurance Program (MAP) on 12 December 2012, which it says will enhance the island nation's quality in manufacturing.

"The MAP will provide regular proficiency tests (PT) for various laboratories to verify their measurement competency as well as help develop their capabilities in compliance with international standards," said acting executive director of NMC, Dr Thomas Liew. NMC is part of the Singapore government's research group A*STAR (Agency for Science, Technology and Research).

"The MAP will also provide consultancy and training, to help ensure various laboratories are capable of making accurate measurements," added Liew.

The programme aims to minimise such manufacturing faults from arising due to poor measurements and boost the productivity of Singapore's vibrant manufacturing industry. Having accurate measurements can translate to efficient manufacturing processes, reducing the risk of monetary loss.

According to NMC, there are around 300 accredited testing and calibration laboratories in Singapore that support the measurement capabilities of the local manufacturing industry. If these laboratories produce inaccurate results, the errors in measurements on which manufacturing decisions or processes are based will have a significant impact on product quality and performance.
