China's WeChat marks 400% growth in Malaysia

Chinese Internet service provider Tencent's mobile social application, WeChat, has reached a record breaking 400 percent growth since it launched in Malaysia in June 2012, reaching 1 million subscribers, it said.

Speaking on 14 November 2012, Tencent International Business Group's country manager, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, Louis Song said this growth meant that WeChat could be the strongest contender to the WhatsApp service.

WeChat, previously called WeiXin, has a total of 200 million subscribers globally, Song said.

"WeChat offers a suite of flexible communication tools which includes instant text & voice messaging, phone & contact information sharing, video calling and social networking plugins to provide an all-in one mobile social marketing platform," he said.

"WeChat is available for global use by supporting up to 17 languages including English, Chinese, Indonesian, Portuguese, Thai, Vietnamese, and Russian and is now working towards offering Bahasa Malaysia for a wider reach in Malaysia," Song said.

"We are very proud to achieve a great and healthy base of subscribers in the Malaysian market in just five months. Our team is committed to continuously improve the user experience and this will definitely be the impetus for WeChat to achieve even greater heights," he said.

Unlike other chat applications in the market, WeChat integrates social networking capabilities into its features. Through WeChat, users will be able to make friends and connect with each other locally or internationally with a touch of a button. Currently, Malaysian celebrities and personalities such as Amber Chia, Daphne Iking, Hannah Tan,
Agnes Lim and Danny One are using WeChat to communicate with their fans and friends.
