Chemical Resistance of MoSi2

MOSIL (MoSi2) has remarkably high chemical resistance and can be used in most furnace atmospheres. The most favorable conditions for MOSIL  (MoSi2) are oxidizing atmospheres such as carbon dioxide, air, and water vapor, but MoSi2 elements also tend to operate well in carburizing, reducing, and neutral atmospheres. Air: At lower temperatures, silicon and molybdenum oxidation on the components' surface occurs at temperatures of around 500°C (930°F). The oxidized product formed is MoO3, which is a yellowish powder. This product usually has no prejudicial effect on the performance of Molybdenum Di Silicide components. The atmosphere of Water vapor and carbon dioxide: Carbon dioxide and water vapor present in the atmosphere will oxidize MOSIL (MoSi2). The supply of water vapor in a controlled atmosphere will increase the temperature limit at which the MOSIL (MoSi2) operates. Effect of Sulfur dioxide: Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) is a pollutant in the atmosphere. It usually does not have any detrimental effects on the Molybdenum Di Silicide. Endogas: Endogas has the following gas composition: 40% Hydrogen, 20% Carbon monoxide, and balanced Nitrogen. It is produced by burning natural gas in a limited supply of air. Due to the presence of hydrogen in endogas, the dew point, gas velocity, and gas composition are critical for knowing the maximum temperature. Carburizing Atmosphere: MOSIL (MoSi2) components are broadly utilized in carburizing furnaces. The components not attacked by the atmosphere typically consist of Nitrogen or endogas with limited additions of a carburizing gas such as methanol or propane. In this furnace, the component's temperature is usually kept lower than 1400°C (2550°F). If there is a carbon buildup in the stove because of high carbon potential, it can lead to element failure. Firing the stove regularly under oxidizing conditions is recommended to remove carbon buildup.
