Silica fume concrete is more expensive than GGBS or Fly Ash concrete and increases the overall costs of the concrete, whereas other supplementary cementitious materials reduce the costs. Silica fume is an abundant material and is about 40% cheaper than other materials, such as Portland cement. Crystalline silica is found in concrete, masonry, and rock materials. When these materials are made into fine dust and suspended in the air, breathing in these fine particles can produce lung damage. Silicosis can be disabling and may lead to death. The construction of silica fume concrete is difficult, as the workability of silica fume concrete is poor. Exposure to Silica, Fused can cause a very serious lung disease called Silicosis with cough and shortness of breath. Very high exposures can cause Silicosis to develop in a few weeks; with lower exposures, it may occur over many years. Use suitable respiratory protective devices when high concentrations are present.
