Silica fume more expensive than cement

Silica fume concrete is more expensive than GGBS or Fly Ash concrete and increases the overall costs of the concrete, whereas other supplementary cementitious materials reduce the costs. Silica fume is an abundant material and is about 40% cheaper than other materials, such as Portland cement. Crystalline silica is found in concrete, masonry, and rock materials. When these materials are made into fine dust and suspended in the air, breathing in these fine particles can produce lung damage. Silicosis can be disabling and may lead to death. The construction of silica fume concrete is difficult, as the workability of silica fume concrete is poor. Exposure to Silica, Fused can cause a very serious lung disease called Silicosis with cough and shortness of breath. Very high exposures can cause Silicosis to develop in a few weeks; with lower exposures, it may occur over many years. Use suitable respiratory protective devices when high concentrations are present.

Eye Protection Wear safety glasses. Wear protective gloves. Body Protection Protective work clothing. Acute Silicosis: This can occur after only weeks or months of exposure to very high levels of crystalline silica. Death occurs within months. Use personal protective equipment, such as a respirator and coveralls, that keeps the dust off the clothes you wear at home. Respirators may still be required if the above controls don't adequately reduce exposure levels. The following describes the NIOSH policy for respiratory protection against airborne exposures to crystalline silica. NIOSH recommends using half-facepiece particulate respirators with N95 or better filters for airborne exposure to crystalline silica at concentrations less than or equal to 0.5 mg/m3.
