Silicon Nitride Material Properties And Si3N4 Ceramic Applications

Silicon Nitride Material Properties:

The relevant material for structural ceramics is Silicon Nitride. The formula for silicon nitride Si3N4 is a superhard substance that has wear resistance and lubricating capabilities. It can also be used as an atomic crystal. The Si3N4 powder is resistant to heat and cold. It will not melt if it’s subjected to rapid cooling or heating.

Silicon Nitride can be precise due to the excellent properties of Si3N4 ceramics. It is used often for manufacturing bearings, gas turbine blades. Permanent molds, seal rings and mechanical parts. Si3N4 ceramics with high resistance to high temperatures, and hard to transfer heat, can be used to make the heating surfaces of components of the engine. It will not only increase the quality of your diesel engine but it also helps you save fuel.

The strength of silicon nitride is high, particularly hot-pressed silicon, which is among the strongest substances in the universe. It is highly resistant to extreme temperatures and can maintain its strength at high temperatures of 1200°C. The powder will not melt when heated, and it will remain solid until the temperature of 1900°C. The chemical resistance of silicon nitride is amazing. It is resistant to almost all organic acids, caustic soda solutions lower than 30% and many other acids. It’s also an excellent electrical insulation material.

Silicon Nitride Apps:

Foreign scientists developed silicon nitride more than 150 year ago. It is an artificially synthesized compound. The earth was still able to sustain the natural silicon nitride until about the ninth century. The age of the earth was first discovered by humankind in meteorites.

Si3N4 powder is an important material for structural ceramics. This includes superior resistance to corrosion, high wear resistance, hardness and high strength. This powder can also be used to make traditional metal products. It cannot adapt to high operating conditions with extreme requirements. However, its parts, such as the components, can be used for mechanical engineering, ultrafine grinding and metallurgy among other fields.

I’ll briefly describe several Si3N4 ceramic product types (including, but not limited too):

(1) Si3N4 ceramic bearings, bearing balls

Ceramic bearings have an important role in mechanical engineering. Their superior strength and resistance to high temperatures make them a preferred choice for new materials applications. Its manufacturing costs are now lower due to improved processing technology. This has made it more affordable for the market. Ceramic bearings have begun to be used in many different industries. It is not limited to precise, small-sized, precision applications.

Materials for ceramic bearings fall into the two categories of silicon nitride (zirconia) Silicium nitride ceramics have a higher rate of speed and are more suitable for high temperatures, high loads and higher temperature environments, as compared to zirconia. Use silicon nitride to make high-precision and precise ceramic bearings. Manufacturing accuracy of up to P4 can be achieved. It is therefore widely recognized that silicon nitride and other ceramic-based composite materials, such as silicon nitride are the best material to manufacture bearings. The main uses of silicon nitride ceramic bearers are: 1) high speed bearings; 2) high temperature bearings; 3) vacuum bearings and 4) corrosion bearings.

These ceramic balls of silicon nitride clay are precision ceramic products that have been sintered at high temperatures and in non-oxidizing environments. They are resistant to acids and alkali, as well corrosion. These can be used long-term in seawater. They also have exceptional insulation and self-lubricating capabilities.

It is not recommended to use lubricating materials in highly polluted environments. At 800, strength and hardness of silicon nitride ceramic balls are virtually unchanged. The density is 3.20g/cm3, the weight is 1/3 that of bearing steel, and the rotational speed is tiny. The ball can operate at very high speeds. The silicon nitride-ceramic balls are primarily the best choice for ceramic bearings.

(2) Turbine-rotor made out of silicon nitride

Turbocharging refers to a technique that makes use of exhaust gases from an engine’s operation in order to drive an air compressor. Turbocharging increases the intake air in the engine to boost the power and torque. This reduces the engine’s fuel consumption and noise. The importance of harmful molecules is great. Turbochargers are dominated by the turbine rotor. This is made up of turbine shafts and blades as well as turbine disks and turbine blades.

High-quality, lightweight silicon nitride ceramics are suitable for high-quality rotor applications. Studies have demonstrated that the inertia and boost time of a turbine-rotor made with silicon nitride is reduced by 40%. This significantly increases the low speed acceleration. Additionally, lightweight technology is possible with the use of silicon-nitride ceramics for turbochargers.

(3) Silicon-nitride ceramic tools

With decreasing global metal minerals for production of cemented caride, rising prices and increasing demand, new technology has been developed to create a range of materials that are high in strength, hardness, corrosion resistance and wear resistance. Ceramic tools have also been born. In 1950, the first generation of ceramic cutters was the alumina ceramic cutters. Second generation composite alumina clay cutters had a higher strength and harderness in 1968 than their predecessors.

The late 1970s saw the emergence of the international ceramic cutting tool-silicon nitride ceramic tools. This device is tougher, more resistant to impact, higher-temperature strength and better resistance to thermal shock than the composite alumina tools. These tools can be used to roughen, fast-cut, heavy-cut cast iron, and high-temperature alloys. The tools’ excellent wear resistance and chemical stability make them more efficient than standard carbide tools. This tool has an average efficiency increase of more than 3x.

Silicon nitride Ceramics exhibit anti-aluminum fluid corrosion characteristics so it can be used in temperature measurement thermocouple tube sleeves and aluminum smelting furnace line lining. It also has aluminum liquid bun and continuous rolling aluminum production lines.

China is seeing the spread of technology for thermocouple tube sleeves made of silicon-nitride ceramics. This allows aluminum liquid temperature measurements to be performed more accurately. This tube sleeve has a better performance rating than traditional stainless steel and corundum-ceramic tube sleeves. Because stainless steel can easily be corroded with aluminum liquids, it will crack after twenty hours of continuous usage, while corundum is unable to withstand temperature shock. A silicon nitride-ceramic sleeve that is long-lastingly stable in aluminum liquid with no cracking during more than 1200 temperature measurements can be described a formidable weapon during processing.
