During plasma jet oxidation testing of pure HfC, it was observed that HfO2 formed due to the rapid speed of the oxygen entering the sample, and the oxy carbide layer formed was merely microns thick. Thus, leading to a thick oxide scale formation, of roughly 165 µm, on the sample's surface.
