Tempo Move, a new home fitness device

Tempo, an intelligent home gym that uses computer vision to track your workouts and provide real-time guidance, has gone on a diet. Today, it introduces Tempo Move, a new home fitness device that ditches the original 42-inch touchscreen with Microsoft Azure Kinect sensors in favor of an existing TV, combined with sensors built into the iPhone XS/XR and above.
This meant Tempo Move had a cleaner setup than the original Tempo Studio, but still had a lot of hardware. At the center is Tempo's so-called "core," which is essentially an iPhone dock that connects to your TV via HDMI. The kit also comes with a storage unit containing "smart weights" including boards and dumbbells. With a suggested retail price of $495 plus a monthly subscription fee of $39, the Tempo Move is well over budget, but it's much cheaper than the Tempo Studio Starter Package's $2,495 price tag. "We are at an inflection point because the iPhone model is capable of running sophisticated AI locally and has precise depth-sensing technology," says Josh Augustin, Tempo co-founder, and CTO. "Experiences that used to require expensive hardware can now be built on devices that many of us already own."
Rhythm movement is designed to provide a similar range of exercises to the original studio. You can get "thousands" of on-site and on-demand exercise classes, covering everything from strength training to HIIT, yoga, and cardio. The system uses computer vision to track smart weights and provide form suggestions, track progress, and give workout recommendations. Tempo says it supports dumbbells at launch and will also support barbell and kettlebell classes next year. As the system relies on Apple's TrueDepth camera technology in the iPhone XS/XR and newer versions (not including the iPhone SE), there is no indication of Android support yet. The company says it's also working to add support for lidar sensors built into the iPhone 12 Pro and later.
The Tempo Move goes on sale today for $395. Tempo said the Move would ship in early December.
