The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 costs just $850 on Amazon
Even more than the Z Fold 3, Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G is a foldable phone that can be your everyday driver if you can handle some compromises. It's arguably the best and most practical version of Samsung's foldable phone yet, and it's now being discounted by $150 on Amazon as part of a special deal dubbed Samsung Week. That pushed the final price down to $850, a record low.
Buy the Galaxy Z Flip 3 at Amazon - $850 Weekly Off at Samsung StoreWe gave the Z Flip 3 an 82, in part because Samsung used the smartphone to fix some of the problems with the previous model. First, it seems to be more durable than the last one -- it doesn't scratch easily and is now IPX8 waterproof. The home screen is 6.7-inch AMOLED with a 2640 x 1080 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Yes, you'll notice the crease, but it doesn't hinder readability -- you'll notice it hinders readability even more because you're probably not used to the screen folding this way. When off, you can use the 1.9-inch external screen to get small information like weather and calendar events, as well as quick access to features like Samsung Pay and media control.
The new Flex mode kicks in when you fold the phone in half, splitting the screen in half in some apps. For example, when watching a YouTube video, the video player will be in the top half of the screen, while the video's details and the comments section will be at the bottom of the screen. This is a clever way to ensure that the entire home screen is useful when the device is partially folded, although we'd like to see more applications support Flex mode soon.
Powered by a Snapdragon 888 processor and 8GB of RAM, the Z Flip 3 has dual cameras on the back and a 10-megapixel selfie camera. The 12-megapixel rear cameras take colorful, detailed photos, and even nighttime photos look very similar to those taken by rival phones from Apple and Google.
The Z Flip 3's biggest sacrifice is durability and battery life. The former is a little harder to predict -- we only used the Z Flip 3 for a short period in our review, so it's unclear how its foldable screen will perform after months or years of use. As for battery life, it will depend on how much you use the external monitor. In our tests, the Z Flip 3 lasted more than a day, but that number dropped to about 11.5 hours when the external display was always on mode. If that's acceptable as a foldable product, Amazon's sale of the Z Flip 3 is the best way we've seen yet to buy a foldable phone at a more affordable price.
