Al4C3 is prepared by a direct combination of two elemental materials at high temperatures.
A mixture of one part heavy smoke black and six parts heavy aluminum powder was prepared, moistened with pine essential oil, placed in a tight layer in a clay crucible, and covered with toner. The cauldron should be covered and all gaps covered with refractory soil mixed with asbestos fibers. Then, the crucible containing the mixture was placed in an oven for pre-drying, and the mixture was burned at a temperature of not less than 1200℃ for 30 minutes. The reaction proceeds better at a higher temperature. After cooling, the product is treated with dilute hydrochloric acid (or an alkaline solution) while it is cool to remove excess aluminum. The aluminum carbide prepared as a fine crystalline powder is washed with water to remove aluminum chloride, then quickly washed with alcohol, and the product is placed in a drying oven at 80 ~ 90℃ for drying. The product contains a large amount of aluminum nitride.
Pure aluminum carbide is colorless, but products made by this process often have different colors due to impurities in the raw material.
When calcined in hydrogen with a mixture of calculated amounts of aluminum and smoke black, pure products without aluminum nitride can be obtained. This calcination takes place at 1800 ~ 1900℃ for 2 ~ 3 hours. The prepared product is ground and calcined again at the above temperature.
What's the difference between CAC2 and Al4C3?
Answer: Probably beryllium carbide [Be2C].And aluminum carbide [Al4c3]. Beryllium oxide [Be0] reacts with carbon at 2000°C[3600°F] to form brick-like beryllium carbide, while the pale yellow aluminum carbide is prepared from aluminum and carbon in a furnace.
