What is Sodium oleate?

What is Sodium oleate?
Sodium oleate, alies sodium octadecenoate, Cis-9-octadecenool, oleol, Olive oil alcohol, Cis-9-octadecenool, 9-n-octadecenool, octadecenool. It is a kind of organic oil and its chemical formula is C17H33CO2Na. It is slightly yellow powder or light brown-yellow coarse powder, with special taste and smell, melting point 232~235 can be foaming and dissolved in water, alkaline soluble in ethanol, neutral insoluble in benzene. Oleate is the main ingredient of olive oil made of soap, is also the main component of tallow soap, can also be made from sodium hydroxide and oleic acid reaction. It is a compound composed of hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups, with excellent emulsifying power, permeability, and detergency, good solubility in hot water. So used as anionic surfactants and fabric waterproof agents.
How is sodium oleate made ?
Sodium oleate is much cheaper than oxyethylene ethers and dehydrates, but it is still water-soluble and lipophilic. Sodium oleate is simple to make and can be neutralized with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate in an ethanol solution of oleic acid.

Application of sodium oleate
Sodium oleate has a molecular weight of 304 Dalton and has antioxidant properties and solubility. Sodium oleate can be seen everywhere in life, such as soap, the main ingredient of tallow soap is sodium oleate. In addition, sodium oleate can be used to make plastic greenhouses, and the use of sodium oleate solved the difficulty of planting vegetables in the cold winter in the north. With greenhouses, customers have more winter vegetables to choose from. And many of the waterproof products also use sodium oleate, ordinary household use of metal parts, such as copper, iron alloy, etc., will be coated with a layer of coating on the surface to prevent excessive oxidation by air corrosion, the composition of the composite layer contains sodium oleate. Sodium oleate can also be used as polishing and lubricant of synthetic fiber, cooling and lubricating emulsifying oil for metal processing, flotation agent of ore, and water-proofing agent of fiber, cleaning agent and preservative of steel ball surface, emulsifier of oil-water system. It can also be used as a corrosion inhibitor for aluminum and its alloys, iron, copper, and other metals in neutral or acidic solutions. Pure sodium oleate has good decontamination ability, can be used as an emulsifier and surfactant, and can be used to treat cholelithiasis. Other metal salts of oleic acid can also be used as lubricants and polishes for waterproof fabrics.
