What is ZrB2?


Zirconium diboride (ZrB2) is an ultra-high-temperature ceramic powder. With good high-temperature strength, it is used in the aerospace industry for hypersonic flight or rocket propulsion. ZrB2 parts are hot pressed and machined into the required shape. Zirconium diboride (ZrB2) is a transition metal boride (TMB) that belongs to the class of ultra-high-temperature ceramics. ZrB2 has a P6/mmm hexagonal crystal structure like several transition metal diborides. Covalent bonds, TM-TM metallic bonds, and TM-B ionic and covalent bonds. Products of the zirconium powder reaction with amorphous boron in a Na2B4O7 ionic melt at 650–850°C and those of the ZrCl4 reaction with NaBH4 at 300–725°C have been studied using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, and elemental analysis. At temperature 750°C, single-phase ZrB2 with a particle size of 6080 nm is formed in a Na2B4O7 ionic melt, whereas the ZrB2 powder obtained via the reaction of ZrCl4 with NaBH4 at temperature 575°C consists of particles differing in shape, some of which are close to spherical with a diameter of 10–35 nm. ZrB2 is well-known in the Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics class. The distinctive features of this class of materials make them good selections for use in various applications such as hypersonic flights, atmospheric re-entry vehicles, and rocket propulsion systems. Zirconium diboride has attracted much attention because of its superior oxidation resistance, which is a consequence of the stability of ZrO2 formed on these materials at high temperatures in oxidizing atmospheres.
