The structure of aluminum boride is similar to that of intermetallic, The borides of aluminum are AlB2, AlB4, and AlB12. Diboride AlB2 can be formed by reacting two simple substances above 600 ℃. It is a layered structure, with Al atoms directly overlapping (A, A mode), and B atoms are filled in the triangular column formed by the direct overlapping of Al atoms; the boron layer is between the two aluminum layers. The boron layer is similar in structure to graphite. The boron atoms are connected into a hexagonal network. The distance between each B atom and the other three B atoms is 0.173nm. Six Al atoms are connected to B. AlB2 is insoluble in dilute sulfuric acid but soluble in nitric acid. AlB12 was generated by the decomposition of AlB2 above 920 ℃.

The finely-divided metallic nickel can be subsequently separated from the aluminum borides by exposure to a stream of carbon monoxide gas which converts the former to gaseous nickel carbonyl, from which the nickel can be recovered and re-used.
