Apple's next big product, after the iPhone, could come out in 2022
Get ready, because it's getting ready to leave Cupertino (again).
If the rumors are to be believed, next year will be a busy one for Apple, with new technology likely to rival such important moments as the launch of the first Macintosh computer in 1984, the first iMac in 1999, or the iPhone in 2007.
This time, the key product will take Apple into a new area: AR/VR glasses.
The project is one of Apple's most ambitious in years and is rumored to include augmented and virtual reality. Augmented reality superimposes computer information on an image of the real world, while VIRTUAL reality places the screen so close to your eyes that your brain can be tricked into thinking you've been transported to a computer-generated world. That's like Microsoft's HoloLens selling for $3,500 and Meta's Quest selling for $299.HoloLens is used to help field technicians share information during inspections and repairs by oil giant Chevron. Quest, meanwhile, is known for its hit immersive games and experiences, such as the time-consuming puzzle game Superhot and the action game Star Wars: Vader's Immortality.
Most of the leaks and rumors have focused on the specifications of the headset, such as its super-fast wireless network, and a source told CNET to expect super-detailed visuals. But several questions are surrounding Apple's headphones, starting with the name -- glass, perhaps?
Its release date is also a mystery. The plan was once set for 2020, but has now been pushed back to next year, sources told Bloomberg and other analysts. We still don't know what Glass will look like, or whether it will be sold as an accessory like the Apple Watch and AirPods.
