What is titanium nitride?

Titanium nitride is a refractory compound with high microhardness and chemical and thermal stability. Titanium nitride has many applications: as a component of special refractories and ceramics, as a crucible material for metal anoxic casting, and as a precursor for wear-resistant and decorative "gold-like" coatings. Studies on the combustion of compacted titanium powder samples in nitrogen have shown that the filtration rate of nitrogen in titanium is the main factor affecting the combustion process. Compared to titanium powder, titanium sponge is a purer, cheaper and more convenient source of titanium.

What are all the uses of titanium nitride?

Titanium nitride is a bright gold ceramic coating applied to metal surfaces by a physical vapor deposition (PVD) process. The coating has high hardness and low friction as well as moderate oxidation resistance. Coatings produced by this method are very smooth and do not require post-painting. TiN coatings are used to maintain the edge and corrosion resistance of machine tools such as drills and milling cutters, typically increasing their service life by more than three times.

Because TiN's metal is gold in color, it can be used to decorate costume jewelry and automotive accessories for decoration. TiN is also widely used as a surface coating for consumer sanitary equipment and door hardware, often using substrates plated with nickel (Ni) or chromium (Cr). As a coating, it is used for aerospace and military purposes, as well as to protect the sliding surfaces of bicycle and motorcycle forks and the shock-absorbing shafts of radio-controlled vehicles. Titanium nitride is also very durable, so it is also used as a protective coating for the moving parts of many rifles and semi-automatic firearms. In addition to being durable, it is also very smooth and can be used to remove carbon deposits very easily. Titanium nitride is non-toxic, meets FDA guidelines, and has been used in medical devices such as scalpels and orthopedic bone saw blades where sharpness and edge retention are important. tiN coatings are also used in implantable prostheses (especially hip replacement implants) and other medical implants.

Applications of TiN films

Although less visible, TiN films are also used in microelectronics as a conductive connection between active devices and metal contacts used to operate circuits, and also as a diffusion barrier to prevent the diffusion of metal into Silicon. In this case, TiN is classified as a "barrier metal" (resistivity ~25 μΩ-cm) even though it is clearly a ceramic from a chemical or mechanical point of view. The latest 45nm and higher technology chip designs also use TiN as a "metal" to improve transistor performance. Combined with a gate dielectric with a higher dielectric constant than standard SiO2 (e.g., HfSiO), it is possible to reduce the gate length while having low leakage, high drive current, and the same or better threshold voltage. In addition, TiN films are being considered to coat zirconium alloys resistant to nuclear fuel accidents.

Due to their high biostability, TiN layers can also be used as electrodes in bioelectronic applications, such as in smart implants or in vivo biosensors, which must withstand severe corrosion caused by body fluids.

Which is better, titanium or titanium nitride?

For softer materials, such as wood, plastics and soft metals, titanium drills are usually a better choice. Although the types of titanium coatings are different. For example, titanium carbon nitride coatings can generally handle harder materials than titanium nitride coatings. Titanium is an element, a metal, and titanium nitride (TiN) is a compound consisting of titanium and nitrogen

Is titanium nitride toxic?

Titanium Nitride (TiN; sometimes referred to as Tinite) is a very hard ceramic material commonly used as a coating on titanium alloys, steel, carbide and aluminum parts to improve the surface properties of the substrate.

TiN is used as a thin coating to harden and protect cutting and sliding surfaces, for decorative purposes (due to its golden appearance), and as a non-toxic exterior for medical implants. In most applications, the coating thickness applied is less than 5 microns (0.00020 inches). Therefore, this study concludes that the tested material is non-toxic, non-irritating, non-hemolytic and biocompatible.
