Silicon monoxide is an inorganic compound, chemical formula SiO, at room temperature and pressure for black-brown to yellow color amorphous powder, melting point 1702°C, boiling point 1880°C, density 2.13g/ cm ³, difficult to dissolve in water, can dissolve in dilute hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid mixed acid and release silicon tetrafluoride, when heated in the air to produce white silicon dioxide powder. Silicon monoxide is less stable and oxidizes to silicon dioxide in the air. As the vapor of silicon monoxide slowly condenses it disproportionates (see disproportionation reaction) to form silicon and silicon dioxide.

Silicon monoxide powder preparation and application
Silicon monoxide can be made by silica and elemental silicon at high temperature after rapid cooling: SiO2 + Si → 2SiO.
