For example, zirconium tetraacetate can be prepared by the reaction of zirconium tetrachloride with an excess of acetic acid at 80°C. Refluxing the mixture to the boiling point produces the formation of zirconium oxaloacetate.

To more systematically understand the synthesis approach, the zirconia synthesis was executed with various carboxylate complexes derived from aliphatic and α-hydroxyl carboxylic acids. In addition, periodic density functional theory (DFT) simulations were applied to support the experimental observation from infrared spectroscopy (IR).
