What is ZrO2?

Zircoa Zirconia Powder (Zirconium Oxide, ZrO2) is synthesized from zircon sand (ZrO2 ·SiO2) using a solid-state reaction process. Zircoa's manufacturing process yields a consistently high purity zirconia composed of monoclinic phase particles. While zirconia (ZrO2) finds extensive use as a ceramic material, it also has important catalyst applications. Due to its unique chemical properties (i.e., surface acidity and basicity), it is a valuable catalyst for elimination, dehydration, hydrogenation, and oxidation. As reported previously, the properties of tetragonal zirconia (t-ZrO2) employed in the applications above highly depend on the precursors used for its preparation. Most interest has focused on preparing a stable ZrO2 powder at <450°C using different precursors, including zirconium carboxylates. The latter can be prepared straightforwardly by reacting sodium carboxylate with an aqueous zirconium salt solution, linking zirconium cations to the carboxylate anions. One of the most widely used precursors for synthesizing zirconia may be zirconium acetate-based ones. For example, zirconium tetraacetate can be prepared by the reaction of zirconium tetrachloride with an excess of acetic acid at 80°C. Refluxing the mixture to the boiling point produces the formation of zirconium oxaloacetate.

 

What kind of ceramic is ZrO2?

Zirconium oxyacetate, Zr4O3(CH3COO)10·3H2O, can also be prepared by refluxing a small amount of zirconium oxychloride with acetic acid. Recently, Guo and Chen reported a novel zirconium oxy-hydroxy acetate complex synthesized from zirconium oxychloride and acetic acid solution, followed by precipitation with concentrated ammonium hydroxide at pH = 6. The product was determined to be Zr4O3(OH)7(CH3COO)3·5H2O and produced a tetragonal zirconium oxide phase with a crystallite size of 30 nm when pyrolyzed at 545°C. Regardless of the numerous studies, few studies have been carried out to investigate the preparation of zirconia from zirconium carboxylates complexes with varying R-groups and their influence on the oxides' properties. Therefore we recently reported a benchmark study using zirconium benzilate as a single-source precursor for synthesizing zirconia. To more systematically understand the synthesis approach, the zirconia synthesis was executed with various carboxylate complexes derived from aliphatic and α-hydroxyl carboxylic acids. In addition, periodic density functional theory (DFT) simulations were applied to support the experimental observation from infrared spectroscopy (IR).
