Application Areas of Stainless Steel 17-4PH

What is 17-4PH?
17-4PH alloy is precipitation, quenching, martensitic stainless steel, and this grade has high strength, hardness (up to 300 0 C/5000 C) and corrosion resistance. After heat treatment, the mechanical properties of the product are more perfect and can reach a compressive strength of up to 1100-1300 mpa (160-190 ksi). This grade cannot be used at temperatures higher than 300 0C (572 0F) or very low temperatures. It has good corrosion resistance to the atmosphere and diluted acids or salts. Its corrosion resistance is the same as 304 and 430.

Application areas of 17-4PH
The main application areas of stainless steel 17-4PH are offshore platforms, helicopter decks, other platforms, food industry, pulp and paper industry, aerospace (turbine blades), mechanical parts, nuclear waste barrels.
Corrosion resistance: The corrosion resistance of 17-4PH alloy is better than any other standard hardenable stainless steel plate. In most cases, its corrosion resistance is no less than 304. If there is a risk of stress corrosion cracking, the higher curing temperature must be higher than 550°C (1022°F), preferably 590°C (1094°F). The best tempering temperature in chloride medium is 550°C-1022°F. The best tempering temperature in H2S medium is 590°C-1094°F. This alloy is susceptible to corrosion or crack corrosion in static sea water. Its corrosion resistance in petrochemical, food processing and paper industry is the same as 304L grade.
Welding: 17-4PH alloy can be welded as follows: SMAW, GTAW, PAW and GMAW. After preliminary tests (check for cracks and weld metal toughness), SAW welding can be carried out. Due to the solidification of ferrite, the possibility of thermal cracking and thermal deterioration of the weld metal is reduced. Generally speaking, preheating is not required, and the intermediate temperature should be controlled at 120°C (248°F). After a complete heat treatment (solution annealing + quench hardening), the toughness will be enhanced. Due to its own martensite structure characteristics, the lower oxygen content in the weld metal keeps it good toughness and ductility. In order to avoid cold cracking, hydrogen intervention should be avoided as much as possible. 17-4PH alloy can be welded with the same kind of filler metal (such as E 630 (AWS A5.4) ER 630 (AWS A5.9). If the mechanical properties of 17-4PH do not need to be considered in welding, you can also use Austrian Stenite is filled with metal, and no heat treatment is required afterwards.
