AC charging is the most flexible, as there are charging stations that can provide the full range of charging needs depending on the user's lifestyle and vehicle usage. If the vehicle is only used for daytime commuting, charging at night is very convenient. AC charging is not ideal for extended charging because it takes too long to charge and requires more distance than the vehicle can travel.

The primary role of an EV on-board charger (OBC) is to manage the current flowing from the grid to the battery. This means that the OBC must conform to the grid at the location where it will be used. The main requirement is not to inject reactive power into the grid, which is achieved through the power factor (PF). The on-board charger must also be suitable for the type of charger available, which means it must support both single-phase and three-phase operations.
It is also required to provide isolation from the power supply and the maximum current the grid can provide, which must be considered in the design. As with all power systems, there is a potential for electromagnetic interference and therefore all relevant EMC standards must be complied with. At this power level, the ability to communicate with the grid is also necessary.
