Google's foldable pixels will be available in 2022, and the camera will be an upgraded version of the Pixel 6

The first foldable Pixel phone will come out in 2022 and won't use the high-end camera sensor used in the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.
One of the biggest advances in the Pixel line this year is in the camera division. Google's phones typically make up for outdated camera hardware with truly impressive software and machine learning improvements, with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro upgraded to 50 million rear-facing cameras. In addition to the cheap megapixels, the Samsung GN1 sensor in the Pixel 6 series is larger, providing more light and more detailed photos.
For the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, Google had to make up for its lack of physical size, resulting in now-iconic camera headlines or "shading" that highlight the phone by a few millimeters. On a traditional tablet smartphone, that's no big deal, depending on your design taste. However, every extra millimeter counts when it comes to foldable phones, and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is more than half an inch thick when folded.
To that end, the upcoming foldable Pixel phone -- code-named "Pipit" -- will use essentially the same camera sensor as last year's Pixel 5, according to information the APK Insight team found in documents related to the newly released Google Camera app. Specifically, the Pixel foldable phone will feature the same 12.2-megapixel IMX363 as the Pixel 3, instead of the new GN1 sensor, which is likely to be the main sensor.
As you may recall, we first reported on the development of a foldable Pixel phone back in August 2020. At the time, the work was being done under the codename passport, tentatively scheduled for release in late 2021. Passports have appeared several times, including in the Google Camera app and various places in the Android 12 Beta.

At some point during development, Google appears to have moved from the original Passport model to a new foldable phone called the Pipit. It's unclear what exactly has changed, but such mid-development code changes have happened before. For example, the Pixel Slate was developed as "Meowth" when it was planned to run on Intel's Cannon Lake processor. When these delays happen, Google recreates the Pixel Slate as "Nocturne" on an older Intel processor.
Going back to camera specs, this Pipit foldable camera will feature a 12-megapixel IMX386 sensor, and if we can rely on the Pixel 6's design, it should be used for ultra-wide cameras. It's worth noting that in the code, this particular camera is marked as "folded," meaning it will only be used when the phone folds shut. We leave this mystery to your imagination and are eager to hear your theory.
Meanwhile, the foldable Pixel will also feature two 8-megapixel IMX355 sensors, one labeled "inside" and the other labeled "outside."Past Pixel phones -- including the Pixel 6, but not the Pixel 6 Pro -- typically used the IMX355 as a front-facing selfie camera. So we think that having two identical cameras built-in, one on the external display and the other on the internal display will help ensure that the foldable pixels take the same quality selfies when folded or unfolded, just like the Galaxy Fold's setup.
It's unclear whether this is an under-display camera sensor like the Galaxy Z Fold 3, or a perforated style like today's Pixel phones.
