What is bismuth telluride?

Bismuth telluride is a gray powder with the formula Bi2Te3. Bismuth telluride is a semiconductor material with good electrical conductivity but poor thermal conductivity. Bismuth telluride is not dangerous, but it can be deadly if ingested in large quantities. But the material allows electrons to move around its surface without energy at room temperature, which could make chips faster and even more efficient.

At the melting point of 585℃, the composition deviates from the stoichiometric ratio and there is a slight excess of Bi. At this time, the measured density (7.8587g·cm-3) is slightly larger than the theoretical value (7.6828g·cm-3). The Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and other properties of Bi2Te3 are all functions of temperature and will change with the change of temperature. When the temperature is lower than -196.56℃, the carrier scattering is mainly controlled by the ionization impurity mechanism and is independent of temperature. When the temperature is higher than -196.56℃, the scattering ability of carriers increases with the increase of lattice vibration, which makes the conductivity of Bi2Te3 decrease. When the temperature is raised to 127℃, the conductivity drops to the lowest value.
When the temperature is higher than 127℃, the intrinsic excitation becomes significant gradually, and the conductivity increases gradually with the increase of temperature. Similarly, the Seebeck coefficient also increases first and then decreases with the increase of temperature. When the temperature is not high, the carrier concentration changes little, and the Seebeck coefficient increases mainly from the increase of scattering. The Seebeck coefficient decreases as the temperature increases to the point where the effect of intrinsic excitation becomes greater.

Topological insulators are not regular superconductors and cannot be used in ultra-efficient power lines because they can carry only a small amount of current, but they pave the way for a paradigm shift in microchip development that will lead to new applications of spintronics, which use the spin of electrons to carry information. Moreover, bismuth telluride is very easy to produce and use in practical applications.
