Malaysian students win third place in students' security conference, Poland

Malaysian students' research among the best presented in a tough competition: Kaspersky Lab
KUALA LUMPUR, 10 JUNE 2010 Malaysian students have won third place in Kaspersky Lab IT-security for the Next Generation' International Students Conference in Krakow, Poland, said the company.

Kaspersky Lab managing director, South Asia, Gun Suk Ling, said Malaysian students Asnita Hashin and Raihana Md Saidi beat out tough international competition to claim third place.

Gun said 10 teams representing universities from the United Kingdom, Russia, Malaysia, India and Kazakhstan presented research papers to a panel, which comprised academics, professors and Kaspersky Lab experts.  

The Kaspersky Lab IT Security for the Next Generation' student conference brought together winners from three preliminary rounds held in Europe, Asia, Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), she said. More than 100 students and professors from leading universities from around the world took part in the conference, along with representatives from Kaspersky Lab's headquarters and regional offices, the media and invited guests.

She added that the winners for the Kaspersky Academy International Students' Conference IT-security for the next generation' were:

1. Camilo Gonzalez from the University of Birmingham, UK, for Analysis of BitTorrent Peers; Behavior and Monitoring Trends'

2. Dmitry Kovalev from Novosibirsk State University, Russia, for Dictionary-Based Spam Detection Methods'

3. Third place was shared between Asnita Hashim & Raihana Md Saidi from Universiti Teknologi Mara, Malaysia, for Normal Signature Based IDs for E-Café', and Niki Aikaterinaki of Royal Holloway University of London, UK, who presented Drive-By Download Attacks: Effects and Detection Methods'

The first placed team received US$1,796 (1,500 euros), second place team received 1,000 euros, and the third placed team received US$1,197 (1,000 euros) as well as the opportunity to represent its institutions of higher learning at an international conference. The first placed winner also received an all-expense paid internship opportunity at Kaspersky Lab's Russian headquarters for one month.
 UiTM students get very positive response

Topics presented focused on the threats and dangers of the Internet, detection methods as well as safety protocols and cyber security law, said Gun. The Malaysian representatives Asnita Hashim and Raihana Md Saidi from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) presented their research paper to a very positive response from the panel of experts.

According to Asnita Hashim, the team's research paper took almost a year to complete from initial draft, to the first presentation during the Malaysian selection round and to the fine-tuning thereafter. The paper details how worms can be detected spreading across networks in specific environments, and carries an important message that networks are constantly under threat at any given time as cyber criminals sniff around for any data including private and confidential information. 

This award provides us with great motivation to do more research in the Malaysian as well international context, said Hashim. We would most probably be using the prize money for our next research study. More importantly, participating and presenting at this prestigious international conference has given us much needed exposure and shown us some of the areas that we need to improve upon.

This conference, shared by the co-founder and CEO of Kaspersky Lab, Eugene Kaspersky, provided a platform for businesses, scientists and academics to address cyber security trends, issues and advances, said Kaspersky Lab's Gun. It is also a great place for Kaspersky Lab to identify new talent. We will be organising the Asian Cup of the Kaspersky Academy International Students' Conference IT-security for the next generation' to keep the momentum going.
