In the area of virtualisation, ITSC is also planning to implement server virtualisation in its data centre, which requires strong storage virtualisation capability to keep pace with the technology migration. HKBU will be able to take advantage of advanced features such as data de-duplication, and thin provisioning.
We have just successfully migrated our users from WebCT to Moodle where only the basic functions of Moodle are used, Leung says. More features of the Moodle system will be explored and utilised to enrich and optimise the e-learning environment.
HKBUs IT initiatives
Apart from the Moodle platform, Joseph Leung, director of the Hong Kong Baptist Universitys Information Technology Services Centre (ITSC), has other IT initiatives in mind to achieve an e-learning and paperless environment at the university. These include:
- Extending wi-fi coverage to facilitate easy access to the university network and hence the Moodle e-learning platform.
- Incorporating a direct and more user-friendly e-mail interface between Moodle and the university e-mail system, to enhance communication between staff and students.
- Investigating ways to increase the notebook-to-student ratio to leverage the increasing wi-fi coverage in the campus.
- Exploring and utilising more features of the Moodle system.
