Singaporean professionals do not have a strong work-life balance unlike countries such as Italy and Australia, according to a newly released survey of 670 professionals conducted by recruitment consultancy Robert Walters.
The majority (67 percent) of Singaporean professionals do not take all their holiday allowance despite the fact that work-life balance has become a very important issue for working professionals in recent years.
Robert Walters is one of the world's largest professional recruitment consultancies with 44 offices in 21 countries. Its Singapore office specialises in placing candidates on a permanent or contract basis in a range of specialities including accountancy & finance, banking & financial services, engineering, operations, legal, human resources, information technology, sales & marketing, secretarial & support, supply chain, procurement & logistics.
The findings of its new survey reveal that 42 per cent of Singaporeans took between 50 and 75 per cent of their holiday allowance.
Also, twenty five percent of those surveyed took between zero and 25 per cent of their holiday allowance.
Long work hours
Singaporeans, says Robert Walters, work long hours and are behind many countries such as Thailand in terms of work life balance.
The nations that showed the highest percentage of professionals taking all their holiday allowance are Thailand (57 percent), Germany (56 percent), Ireland (56 percent), New Zealand (54 percent) and UK (54 percent).
"The figures reflect that Singaporeans do not have a strong work-life balance unlike countries such as Italy and Australia," said Andrea Ross, managing director - Singapore & Malaysia.
"Singapore is a fast-moving economy and to make the most of this, people tend to work longer hours so that they don't miss out on any opportunities on the work front. I encourage employees who are reluctant to take leave to do so as it gives you a healthy outlook, time to refresh yourself and opens your eyes to other cultures when travelling."
