Dental caries periodontal disease are the two most common dental diseases which affect about 35% of the world's population. If caries periodontal disease develop to a certain extent it will cause permanent damage to teeth gums. Therefore early diagnosis treatment of these lesions is necessary. However most countries are faced with the problem of insufficient number of professional dentists uneven distribution of health facilities resources which makes dentists often only pay attention to patients with serious dental lesions easily ignore the screening of early hidden lesions. The high cost also limits the routine dental examination for low-income people. Therefore to develop a simple convenient low-cost method to realize the diagnosis accurate positioning of early dental lesions is an urgent problem in the biomedical field.

When some sulfur-containing proteins are decomposed by anaerobic bacteria volatile sulfide compounds (VSCS) such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) methyl mercaptan (CH3SH) dimethyl sulfide (ch3sch3) other metabolic by-products can be produced. Therefore early diagnosis of caries periodontitis can be achieved by detecting VSCS. However current detection methods mainly focus on VSCS in exhaled air can not provide detailed information such as specific lesion location lesion degree. Therefore the development of a detection method to accurately reflect the location of dental lesions (especially hidden lesions) is very valuable. By detecting the release of local VSCS the accurate location of patients' teeth lesions was achieved. ZnO PDMS braces can produce highly sensitive selective response to VSCS (especially H2S) which shows fluorescence quenching at corresponding positions. At the same time ZnO PDMS braces showed high fluorescence stability good biocompatibility low toxicity in physiological environment. Furthermore by analyzing the images of ZnO PDMS braces worn by the subjects the location of dental lesions (including caries hidden lesions) can be accurately located.

in general the wearable fluorescent ZnO PDMS braces have the following characteristics: (1) low cost simple preparation long-term stability; (2) accurate positioning of hidden lesions on each tooth; (3) transparent appearance soft material high patient compliance. It has the potential of large-scale application in preliminary screening accurate location of dental lesions. In addition as ZnO PDMS is a kind of porous inert material with drug loading potential it is expected to develop a diagnosis treatment platform with both diagnosis treatment functions. In the future the application scope of this technology can be extended from dental health care to other fields such as oral biochemical detection respiratory gastrointestinal disease diagnosis the development of other wearable detection devices related to public health.
