Oneplus may launch a dual-hinged foldable phone in the future

OnePlus could be the latest big entrant in the foldable phone race. According to a patent discovered by LetsGoDigital, the company is envisioning a unique device that is distinct from the likes of Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Huawei's Mate X2.
The patent describes a OnePlus foldable phone that uses two hinges instead of one, dividing it into three folding parts. The thickest part, which may contain the battery and necessary internal components, rotates around the larger hinge. When this main part is hidden, the phone can be used as a traditional glass sandwich. The second hinge supports two thinner sections. When these Windows are open, the phone effectively expands the display area by three times. The OnePlus design also has some practical benefits. The phone can support itself by folding the screen into a triangle. To prevent hinges in their different configurations, one plus uses magnets to activate mechanical sliders.
This isn't the first time we've seen a double hinge foldable. Back in 2019, TCL unveiled a concept for a Z-shaped screen that folds and unfolds. Samsung Display introduced the idea of multiple screens earlier this year. While the appearance factor seems to allow manufacturers to cram larger displays into pocket-sized foldable phones, the extra hinges pose another problem. At a time when traditional foldable phones are already considered too expensive, the complexity of a triple foldable phone could lead to a higher sticker price.
Of course, this is just a patent filed by OnePlus, and patents don't necessarily guarantee consumer products. It may just be an offer by OnePlus to retain its share of the market segment. But it's impossible to rule out the company's foldable plans, especially after rumors that BBK siblings' foldable projects are gaining steam.
