SONY has released the Alpha 7 IV, the successor to the very popular Alpha 7 III, with a 33-megapixel sensor, 10 frames per second shooting, and a range of video features that SONY says is a true hybrid full-frame system.
The Alpha 7 IV is powered by a 33-megapixel backlit sensor (BSI) powered by SONY's latest-generation processor. While not stacked, SONY promises that the camera will deliver the top image quality and advanced AI autofocus. In addition, the company is equipping the Alpha 7 IV with what it calls "revolutionary" film technology to create a device specifically designed to mix photos and video.
Of all the cameras offered by SONY, the Alpha 7 IV sits above the A6600, alongside the Alpha 7 III and a7C, but below the Alpha 7S III, Alpha 7R IV, and Alpha 1. In short, this camera sits squarely in the middle of SONY's entire camera lineup.SONY is targeting existing mixed shooters and advanced amateurs, as well as users who think streaming and file sharing are the most important new developments.
The 33-megapixel sensor has 759 phase-detection automatic focus, covering 94% of the sensor, and provides real-time eye autofocus for humans, animals, and birds. It also slightly improves the IBIS system, providing 5.5-bit image stabilization, up from the previous 5-bit compensation.
SONY says its latest autofocus algorithm can achieve light level accuracy as low as EV-4 in AF-S mode.
The camera can shoot 828 uncompressed RAW and JPEGs in a row, thanks to a more powerful processor and larger buffer, as well as faster memory card writing.
From a hardware standpoint, this camera has a few design changes over its predecessor. First, it uses a 3.68-megapixel OLED viewfinder with optional frame rates of 60 and 120 frames.SONY says both it and the rear LCD improve real-time image quality due to higher resolution and less false color.SONY has also made the handle bigger in shape, which it says minimizes stress for photographers during long shots.
The aforementioned rear LCD is a variable Angle type -- also colloquially known as a "flip" screen -- which makes it easier to capture additional angles than the previous generation's tilting design.
SONY also moved a few buttons and added a dedicated record button to the top of the camera. What is the exposure compensation dial on the Alpha 7 III is now an assignable rear "R" dial that can be locked. There's still a dedicated, movie and S&Q dial, a new menu structure with additional touch controls, new Atrial fibrillation (buttons, SONY says have been optimized for tactile feedback and placement for easy access, a refined multi-selector better-Textured surface for more control of feeling, There's also a control button that the company says provides enhanced "clicking" and more tactile feedback.
Under the camera's mode dial, there is now a ring that allows the user to quickly switch between still and video modes. When these changes are made, the control has a specific role that is different from the role in movie mode.SONY sees this as a big step towards a truly hybrid camera.
