SHENZHEN, CHINA, 25 February 2011- Three out of China's top four airlines- Air China, China Southern Airlines, and Hainan Airlines- are now allowing their customers to pay online via PayPal.
The airlines have been accepting Paypal payments on their international websites since the beginning of 2011. The strategic move is already showing results as overseas Chinese have used this service to book their flights back to mainland China in the past month.
The Chinese airline industry is also profiting as all the top four airlines have expanded their global reach and overseas business through this online payment solution.
PayPal is an e-commerce business allowing payments and money transfers to be made through the Internet. Online money transfers serve as electronic alternatives to traditional paper methods such as checks and money orders. The company maintains that its solution is used by 94 million active consumers in 190 markets and 24 currencies.
High end customers
The Chinese airline industry is earning through PayPal typically through sale of tickets of higher-priced international flights.
Travelers interested in using Air China can book and purchase tickets via PayPal on the airline's websites in the United States, Australia, and Singapore.
"Improving our marketing capability in international markets by developing e-commerce is an important strategic measure for Air China," said Zhang Lan, vice president of Air China. "In collaboration with PayPal, Air China will offer more payment options for travelers who purchase tickets directly on Air China's international websites, thus providing faster and safer online payment method and improving travelers' ticketing experiences."
China Southern Airlines accepts PayPal for all routes on its international website and Hainan Airlines is using PayPal on its US website and intends to integrate PayPal on its global website soon for travelers around the world.
