SHENZHEN, CHINA, 4 MARCH 2011- CSL now has 127.6 MHz of radio spectrum in Hong Kong, 28 per cent more than any other mobile operator.
The company has maintained its significant market leadership following the Auction of Radio Spectrum held by the Office of the Telecommunications Authority.
CSL is a subsidiary of Australian telecommunications and information services company Telstra Corporation. It operates mobile broadband network in the Asia Pacific and is the only operator in Hong Kong to provide extensive 3G coverage through UMTS 900.
The company noted that radio spectrum is a critical factor in network capacity and customer experience, especially as mobile data usage is increasing each day.
Maximise customer experience
Recently, CSL's competitors sought withdrawal of unlimited data plans in Hong Kong as they were not able to anticipate the need for additional radio spectrum to meet future customer demand.
Unlimited data plans for smartphones made a significant impact on network quality and capacity and this resulted in high prices paid by other operators for the small blocks of non-contiguous spectrum in the auction.
Joseph O'Konek, CEO of CSL, noted that the spectrum auction result validates CSL strategy initiated in 2007 to lead the Hong Kong market in building network capacity ahead of customer needs.
CSL has been buying large blocks of contiguous spectrum since 2007 and was the first to deliver both an All-IP network and an LTE network in Hong Kong.
"Our focus is now on maximising customer experience on the fastest mobile broadband network in the Asia Pacific, while our competitors are facing the challenges of providing a return on their spectrum investments, complex network integrations and new technology rollouts -- challenges that are already behind us," added O'Konek.
Looking ahead, CSL intends to continue investing in its Next G network to maintain market leadership in Hong Kong and deliver world-class broadband performance to all its customers throughout the territory.
