Two years after Adobe launched Creative Cloud, Cyberlink is taking a similar path with its Director Suite Live. The suite — consisting of PowerDirector, a video editor and production tool; PhotoDirector for photo manipulation and slideshows; ColorDirector for video color effects; and the AudioDirector audio editor — is now available on a subscription basis and includes 10GB of online storage and collaborative features.
While not quite at the level of Adobe's apps in terms of features, and lacking the breadth of Web and other auxiliary development tools that its rival offers, Director Suite is quite capable and available for a relative pittance. Creative Cloud costs $50 (one-year subscription) to $80 monthly (month-to-month). Director Suite Live costs $50 for a three month subscription and only $99 yearly, including the aforementioned storage and Web collaboration.
The suite is still available in traditional, perpetual license form for $300, but yearly upgrades of Director Suite have weighed in at $150 for existing owners. If you're the type that likes to keep their programs up to date, the subscription plan might actually be considered a bargain. If you think Director Suite already meets your needs, perhaps not. If the 10GB of free storage included isn't sufficient, additional storage is available at $1 per gigabyte per year in 20GB, 50GB, and 100GB increments. Note that you'll need a fast broadband connection to really take advantage — video is bandwidth intensive.
Director Suite Live utilizes an application manager to download and install the suite components, as well as tracking your continued right to use the software. The application manager is actually slicker than Cyberlink's previous local installation apps, in that you can more easily pick and choose what you want to download.
The applications in Director Live Suite remain largely the same as they were in the recently reviewed Director Media Suite 2 and the original. Read that as good enough for everyone but those working in the upper echelons of the video industry. If you're unfamiliar, take the demo for a spin.
