Design firm dwp overcomes network latency challenges

WAN optimisation tool from Silver Peak speeds up CAD transfers from days to hours.

Architecture design firm dwp has adopted a WAN optimisation system from Silver Peak to accelerate file transfers and reduce infrastructure costs by 80 percent.

The platform, Virtual Acceleration Open Architecture (VXOA), is now able to speed up transfers of AutoCAD-based files from days to minutes. According to dwp, it now takes only a few minutes to transfer 1 GB of data across the distributed enterprise, which includes 12 locations across Asia Pacific and the Middle East.

There was an urgent need for dwp to lower its operating expenditure (OPEX) costs, which soared dramatically due to an increase in bandwidth costs necessitated by poor network connectivity between its data centre located in Bangkok and the various branch offices. In addition, link costs and latency were the highest between Bahrain and Bangkok.

According to dwp, the VXOA was already impressing executives during the evaluation stage. "It was able to compress as many applications as we put through the pipe without any hiccups. Network optimisation was remarkably robust and smooth," said Niwat Lertnamvongwan, group IT director at dwp.

Another plus point was that VXOA is software-based when many optimisers are hardware-based. This made deployment simpler and scalable without dependency on hardware requirements.

"We have also experienced a sharp reduction in hardware, bandwidth and software licensing costs by as much as 80 percent with our network performing optimally to maximise the benefits of virtualisation and cloud computing. At the end of the day, our biggest gain is peace of mind and knowing that we can rely on our optimised network to deliver our best for our customers," said Lertnamvongwan.
