Singapore’s first ever online registry dedicated to the nation’s infocomm technology (ICT) industry was launched by the Singapore Computer Society (SCS) on 8 November.
Named InfoPier, the initiative - conceptualised last year with the support of the Infocmm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) - is intended to assist ICT professionals in their career development and allow them to keep abreast of changes in the industry by creating a diverse infocomm community and a rich repository of shared knowledge.
Some of InfoPier’s features include user-generated profiles of ICT professionals based on websites such a LinkedIn, a library of user-generated content, discussion groups, Facebook integration, and blog creation.
“InfoPier harnesses the connective power of social networking to create a vast resource of professionals’ profiles, shared knowledge, industry thought-leadership, information on training and upgrading, collective data on products, services and events, content on key ICT issues, and facts and figures on the industry,” said SCS President Alphonsus Pang.
The platform will be enhanced further in future to include a jobs portal that will match members’ professional profiles to job vacancies, Pang continued.
One of the main objectives of InfoPier is to bridge the gap between the demand and supply of infocomm manpower. “It will help fill infocomm jobs which IDA aims to boost to 170,000 by 2015,” said Pang.
Membership for InfoPier is free until August next year. Subsequently, it will cost S$48 per year for a basic membership and S$68 for a premium one.
600 industry leaders reportedly already have signed up for InfoPier even before its official launch announcement.
Accenture’s executive partner Lawrence Goh said in an interview after the announcement that he is a keen supporter of the InfoPier initiative. “It is a good vehicle for ICT professionals to showcase their skills, and for employers to seek potential talents,” he said.
"It’s about time we had registry like this," Goh added.
Asked about how InfoPier could compete with global professional social networking websites such as LinkedIn, Goh replied that it does not compete but rather complements such sites. For instance, InfoPier gives employers an added avenue to validate the credibility of potential employees, he said.
