Chinese ICT solutions giant Huawei has launched a multi-faceted programme along with Telekom Malaysia (TM) and Celcom to help relief efforts in the eastern coast of Malaysia, which have been affected by some of the heaviest floods since 1971.
Malaysia's chief executive officer Abraham Liu said the company's programme included a relief kit worth more than RM500,000 [US$140,454] comprising RM350,000 [US$98,317] cash donations, power generators, mobile power banks, skilled manpower and hardware supplies.
The programme will help immediate service recovery to help flood victims and facilitate aid work such as those recently announced by the national ICT agency Multimedia Development Corporation [MDeC] in any way possible, said Liu.
"We are committed to helping the communities we serve, and our thoughts are with the affected families in the eastern coast," he said. "We are prepared to partner with the Malaysian authorities in any way we can in their relief and recovery efforts. We would like to thank our partners for coming forward and contributing to the cause."
"We also strongly urge the ICT and telecommunication community as well our partners to respond in the immediate aftermath of the floods. At a difficult time such as this, these partnerships are essential for a quick and holistic approach to disaster relief and recovery," Liu said.
He said relief work was already underway in the region "with the company's engineers working round the clock to repair the damaged network in the flooded area. A dedicated Huawei technical team has been dispatched to work closely with operators for immediate service restoration."
"We believe that seamless communication is a critical pillar of relief during natural disasters and other critical events in which protecting lives and property is the first consideration. Our foremost priority at the moment is to restore reliable telecommunication network in the disaster-struck area," said Liu.
