Malaysian ICT solutions firm Web Bytes' cloud-based retail management solution Xilnex has been officially certified under the Malaysian Common Criteria Evaluation and Certification (MyCC) Scheme, operated by CyberSecurity Malaysia, an agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).
Web Bytes chief executive officer Ooi Boon-Sheng said on 8 March 2012 that Xilnex is Malaysia's first ever cloud based retail management solution. "Security of cloud-based offerings is one of the main concerns we regularly encounter when we engage the market. With this certification, we are proud to be able to provide further assurance to our customers on the credibility of Xilnex as a highly secured cloud-based retail solution."
"As more businesses look into cloud computing in order to cut costs and access cutting-edge applications, they are also wary of the security implications of cloud-based solutions," said Ooi. "In traditional IT systems, security of data is undertaken by IT administrators who store the data in-house on the company's servers, controlling access to it and putting in place the necessary safeguards. With cloud-based IT solutions, the organisation's data are held elsewhere by their cloud-based solution provider."
"It is with this understanding of our customers' concerns that we have embarked on this security certification journey. By being certified by an independent certification body using internationally recognised standards, it is no longer about getting our customers to just take our word for it," he said.
"Web Bytes is among the first few Malaysian ICT solution providers that received the certification after undergoing a vigorous evaluation process and the security functionality certified against a defined criteria and international standards," Ooi said. "The Certification Body for MyCC Scheme is known as Malaysian Common Criteria Certification Body (MyCB), a unit within Information Security Certification Body (ISCB) Department, CyberSecurity Malaysia."
"Xilnex comes with built-in customer and service management, point-of-sales (POS), inventory control, services tracking and integrated marketing tools to help retailers manage and operate more efficiently, reduce IT costs and also increase sales," he said.
"We are delighted to have Web Bytes as one of the very first Malaysian company focusing on the retail industry to be certified under this scheme," said CyberSecurity Malaysia chief executive officer, Lt Col (R) Prof Dato' Husin Jazri. "The objectives of the scheme are to increase Malaysia's competitiveness in quality assurance of information security based on the Common Criteria (CC) standard or ISO/IEC 15408, and to build consumer's confidence towards Malaysian information security products."
