Maynilad Water Services, the Philippine water concessionaire with that country's largest customer base, has virtualised its existing IT infrastructure with VMware's vSphere.
Such virtualisation has resulted in improvements in its customer services delivery by at least 50% , according to a press statement by VMware.
Maynilad has a customer base of 8.9 million, mostly in the Western zone of the country's National Capital Region, Metro Manila.
The press statement by the Palo Alto, California-based vendor of virtualisation software said Maynilad consolidated its servers with the deployment of vSphere, replacing its earlier IT model of one server for each applications.
Some of these applications were its water leaks management systems, field signals monitoring systems and customer relationship management systems.
The earlier IT model had imposed on Maynilad the challenge of managing multiple applications and vast amounts of data, burdening it with high operating costs and underutilised resources. Capital and labour intensive, it was ill-equipped to support the concessionaire's responsiveness to increased demand and application use.
The press statement said the deployment of vSphere enabled more accurate and flexible storage allocation to reduce from days to minutes the provisioning of servers. It also brought about faster response time using fewer resources.
Likewise, it enhanced support for more than four times the number of servers and at least one and half times the number of applications.
Among the operational benefits cited by the press statement was the fact that the deployment has enabled its leaks management system to recover 863 million liters of treated water, to bring about a 34% reduction in wastage.
Virtualisation also has helped Maynilad to provide 24-hours water supply to 99.98 % of the area covered by its concession.
Maynilad's concession extends also to a number of cities and towns in Cavite, a nearby province south of Manila proper.
