Microsoft Office propels marine design and manufacturing firm

Tech giant showcases customer use example to improve adoption of the new Office platform.

When the chance to put the new Microsoft Office on trial came along, Lucas Goh, global IT infrastructure manager, Berg Propulsion, took the opportunity to see if the new platform could help improve productivity and collaboration.

"Berg Propulsion's workforce is scattered across 12 countries globally. This means that our office productivity and communication tools have to be top-notched to maximise communication and collaboration," said Goh.

Swedish company Berg Propulsion designs and manufactures controllable pitch propellers for the marine industry. The firm has production facilities in Sweden and Singapore, as well as sales and services offices throughout the world.

"We have deployed this trial across five percent of Berg Propulsion's workforce. The feedback from these trial users has been largely positive, while they felt that they can now do things faster and with more impact," said Goh.

Berg Propulsion users found out that Word can now open PDF files and edit seamlessly with PDF Reflow feature, and PowerPoint's Zoom feature now enables presenters to zoom in to specific parts of a slide to help people focus better.

In addition, the company's sales personnel are now about to churn out reports faster with the Flash Fill feature in Excel. The Flash Fill function is a data entry tool that attempts to complete the keying in of information for the user.

"The users also felt that they can now be more collaborative with their colleagues and customers. For example, Contacts on Outlook is seamlessly linked to social media channels," said Goh.

"The new Office is inherently social," said Todd Cione, Chief Marketing & Operating Officer, Marketing & Operations, Asia Pacific region, Microsoft Operations. For example, social media platforms such as Linkedin and Facebook can be linked to the People Hub function in the new Outlook, said Cione.

On 16 January 2013, Microsoft announced that the New Office, Exchange 2013, Lync 2013, SharePoint 2013, Project 2013 and Visio 2013 are made available for Singapore enterprise customers.

The new Office has been redesigned to work best with the new tile-based Windows 8 interface, which is optimised for touch screens like those found in tablets but can also be used with keyboards and mice.

The new Data Loss Prevention features in Exchange help identify, monitor and protect sensitive data through deep content analysis. Compliance officers can use the new Exchange eDiscovery Center to discover and analyse Exchange, SharePoint and Lync data stored in Exchange from a single interface. With the Exchange Administration Center - IT administrators now have a single, easy-to-use Web-based administration interface that simplifies management.

In the Lync 2013, the new Lync Federation extends unified communications with robust security over the Internet across various messaging platforms, including Skype, AOL Instant Messenger and Google Talk. Users can now hold virtual conferences or ad-hoc conversations with interactive video by seeing multiple video streams simultaneously and see the active speaker automatically.
