With the theme 'Smart Living, Smart Homes', the competition will see participants using open source technologies to develop solutions that will improve lives.

Together with the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), open source solutions provider RedHat has kicked off its fourth competition for tertiary students across the Asia Pacific region, the Red Hat Challenge@Labs.

In line with Singapore's efforts to become a smart nation, the theme for this year's challenge is 'Smart Living, Smart Homes'. The challenge will require students to use open source technology to develop smart home solutions for smart cities while helping to address the business challenges that enterprises face today and in future. Students, however, will not be embarking their projects on their own — they will be guided by professionals from Red Hat, IDA and the Institution of Engineers Singapore.

"This challenge provides our next-generation of IT professionals the opportunity to experience community-powered innovation through open collaboration and knowledge exchange on a regional platform," said Dirk-Peter van Leeuwen, senior vice president and general manager at Red Hat Asia Pacific.  He added that the competition will also "bring together innovative minds, foster greater collaborations and discover tech talents to strengthen the open source community."

Full-time tertiary students from China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand who are interested in the challenge can register themselves at from now till 11 July 2014.

The winner will be announced at the finale in Singapore on 15 December 2014 and will walk away with US$10,000 in cash and an internship opportunity with Red Hat in Beijing.
