Business continuity often confused with disaster recovery: FalconStor

KUALA LUMPUR, 6 JUNE 2011 - Many businesses are confused when they refer to business continuity and disaster recovery as the same thing, according to disk-based data protection firm FalconStor Software.

"Business continuity and disaster recovery are two different things though many think they are the same thing," said FalconStor Software CEO Jim McNeil. "Business continuity is a framework that ensures business continues as before a hardware, human error or powerful failure. This is accomplished by arrays and redundant arrays and so forth. Servers can be mirrored across great distances. These are all business continuity processes."

"A business continuity plan is not a disaster recovery plan. In disaster recovery, the focus is on recovering what was lost and reversing damage," McNeil said. "You need to have both. If you can afford only one, then a disaster recovery strategy is the bare minimum of what you need in a business."

He said the key acronyms were RPO (recovery point objective) and RTO (recovery time objective) and the automation of these.  "RPO (recovery point objective), which is about how much data can a business afford to lose, while RTO (recovery time objective) is about how much time a business can afford to lose. Some businesses have an RTO of three hours, some more."

"Our customers are asking for us to be able to move any data 'anywhere at 'any time'," McNeil said. "This is complicated because any data could mean unstructured or structured data. Unstructured data is doubling for most enterprises every year."

"Any time is about RPO and RTO and is an economic function," he said. "Anywhere is complicated by multiple protocols, hardware and operating systems and hardware."

"Incidentally, in terms of operating and capital expenditure, it is interesting to note that the cost of managing 1TB (terabyte) of data per year in the US is US$18, 000," McNeil added. "In addition, good storage architecture will use multiple technologies like hard drive, SSD (solid state disk) and so forth."

Founded in 2001 and listed on NASDAQ, FalconStor Software has more than 500 staff and 23 in-country offices.

 During the launch event in Malaysia of the company's DR solution, called FalconStor Continuous Data Protector (CDP), which uses its RecoverTrac technology tools, FalconStor Software regional director, Asia South, Simon Ng, said disaster recovery is not easy.

"Delivering service-oriented data protection (SODP) and the future is about automation of tasks such as backup and disaster recovery," said Ng. "Data growth management can be shrunk by our SnapShot technology, which allows flexible delta forever backup through automated snapshots."
