KUALA LUMPUR, 19 NOVEMBER 2010 -- Malaysian communications provider DiGi Telecommunications has announced that the Malaysian winner will be sponsored to represent the country at the world's largest clean technology business competition in San Jose, US, later this month.
DiGi chief executive officer Henrik Clausen said the Global CleanTech Open competition was one of two DiGi Deep Green Challenge for Change programmes that aimed to bring together Malaysians to showcase the best eco-friendly GreenTech and Social Venture ideas that could be taken through to commercialisation.
"The competition forms part of the company's efforts to encourage the development and practice of innovative green solutions to help reduce its shared climate impact in the community," said Clausen.
A sustainable future is a shared responsibility," he said. "There is so much more we can do, not only to reduce our own footprint but to create opportunities to help others do the same."
Challenge for Change is an example of a platform we have created to reach out to Malaysians and provide them with a forum to champion climate change issues," said Clausen.
"We want to inspire, challenge and guide Malaysians to discover new, meaningful and innovative solutions on energy and green technology. By nurturing talents through sharing of knowledge in green technology and best practices in entrepreneurship, we believe we can start putting in place the building blocks that will help realise Malaysia's green ambitions.
DiGi's Deep Green is a company-wide initiative that drives energy efficiency and environmental sustainability into every aspect of DiGi's business. With Deep Green, the company aims to reduce its business carbon dioxide footprint by 50 per cent by 2011, from 2008.
Congregation of 'greenies'
"In addition to the cash prize of RM10,000 [US$3,212], the winner of the Malaysian leg will join winners from countries around the world for a congregation of greenies' at the Global CleanTech Open. They will get the opportunity to present their idea to a global crowd of 2,500 investors, entrepreneurs, sponsoring companies, and members of academia, and a chance to win over RM300,000 [US$96,370] in marketing support, legal advising, conferencing services and more to help launch their green tech business idea," said Clausen.
