Oil and gas have a different story. They started as microscopic plankton in ancient seas. When these organisms died, they sank to the ocean floor. Mud rich in organic matter covered them. This mud became shale rock over time. Shale is the “source rock” where oil and gas form.

But oil and gas rarely stay in shale. They’re slippery. They squeeze into nearby porous rocks. Sandstone and limestone are perfect examples. These rocks have tiny spaces between grains. Think of sandstone as a hard sponge. Oil and gas migrate upward, trapped by non-porous rocks like shale or salt domes above. That’s why we drill through cap rocks to reach reservoir rocks below.

Not all sedimentary rocks hold energy riches. Conditions must be just right. The organic material needs enough heat to “cook” but not too much. Too much heat destroys oil, leaving only gas. The rock layers also need the right structure to trap the fuels. Without a seal, they escape to the surface.

Coal forms in places with lots of plant growth and slow burial. Oil and gas form in marine basins with rapid sediment buildup. This explains why certain regions have specific resources. Pennsylvania’s coal comes from Carboniferous swamps. Texas oil comes from Cretaceous ocean basins.

Understanding these rocks helps us find new energy sources. Geologists look for sedimentary basins with the right history. They study rock layers, test samples, and map underground structures. This knowledge reduces drilling risks. It also shows why some areas have abundant resources while others have none.
