More local youths are getting engaged in the act of citizen journalism on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, according to a recent survey of 801 Singapore youths.
Conducted by the Singapore Polytechnic’s students from the diploma in Media and Communication, the study revealed that local youths are not only getting updates on the latest happenings from social media sites, but are also active content providers.
65.9 per cent of the survey respondents have shared content online, and 72.2 per cent of them are from the 15 – 24 years-old age group.
The findings from the survey further indicated that citizen journalism has an influence in shaping youths’ views towards politics as well as their purchasing habits.
Additionally, according to the study, youths are concerned about the credibility of information. Almost three quarters of the group surveyed said they verify the accuracy of the content they read.
“The key takeaway from this year’s survey is that social media is making it easier for anyone to become a journalist. Youth are not only reading about the views of others through citizen journalism, but sharing content of their own. As citizen journalism is a growing trend, the credibility of information becomes an important issue we need to be aware of,” said Lam Yoke Peng, director of Singapore Polytechnic’s School of Communication, Arts and Social Sciences.
