Internet usage in Asia varies across the region

Internet-based messaging and calls are hot in Asia, says Telenor Research.

Internet usage among young mobile internet users in Asia varies greatly across the region, according to a new study released today by Telenor Research.

Internet-based messaging and calls are hot in Asia, says the survey that is based on the responses of people between 16-35 years.

This age group uses internet on their mobile phones - a demographic Telenor identifies as 'Digital Frontrunners.

In Pakistan, 74 percent of the frontrunners answered that they would make a traditional phone call several times a day.

While the Thai frontrunners were at 58 percent, 40 percent of the Malaysian frontrunners said that they would have traditional phone calls at this high frequency.

"It is crucial to have surveys like this one looking at 'Digital Frontrunners' who can help forecast future industry trends," said Bjørn Taale, head of Research, Telenor Research.

Mobile voice calls

The majority of respondents in all countries except Malaysia pointed to traditional mobile voice calls when asked which communication service they considered most important on the mobile phone.

In Malaysia, the large majority found messaging apps to be the crucial type of communication service available.

The use of internet voice calls was most popular among the Thai frontrunners - with 65 percent using it daily - and only 3 percent saying they 'never' use this means of communication.

Video calls are most popular among Thai frontrunners with 52 percent stating they use it daily. Both Thai (68 percent) and Malaysian (71 percent) respondents use messaging apps several times a day.

Each country has its own additional favourite services.  LINE is popular with Thai frontrunners and Malaysians prefer WhatsApp. Among Pakistanis who do use internet messaging, WhatsApp is marginally more popular than Facebook messenger.
