Professional networking site LinkedIn has added a new category in the personal information details of its members, which number in the millions.
LinkedIn said information on volunteer experience and causes can now be included in the personal information of its members. This added feature is a result of a survey the company did in some countries worldwide, including the India and Singapore in Asia.
The new field in LinkedIn is labelled "Volunteer Experience & Causes," and this is where members can add information about volunteer positions, causes they care about, and organisations they support. Depending on this location, members can select from a list of charitable or not-for-profit organisations they support.
LinkedIn surveyed professionals worldwide and found that many of them have or had volunteer experience.
In India, for example, LinkedIn surveyed over 400 and 71 percent of them had experience volunteering. However, only 34 percent of professionals include their volunteer experience on their resume. In a survey done among 1,000 Singapore professionals, 75 percent said they had experience volunteering, but only 28 percent include this on their resume.
Yet, professionals also said they considered the volunteer experience of job candidates when evaluating their resume. In India, 55 percent of professionals said they did so. In Singapore, 40 percent of professionals said they considered volunteer work as valuable when seeking candidates to hire.
In India, 29 percent hiring managers surveyed agreed they had made a hiring decision based on a candidate's volunteer work experience. In Singapore, the number is 15 percent.
"Many professionals in Singapore are increasingly realising the importance of maintaining a professional brand online," added Arvind Rajan, managing director and vice president, Asia Pacific and Japan, LinkedIn. "Having a brand that accurately reflects the full spectrum of one's experience is crucial for professional success in Singapore's talent-driven economy."
