MWC: Opera launches Mini mobile web browser for iPad

Opera Mini app shown at MWC; App Store approval pending

LONDON, 14 FEBRUARY 2011 - Opera is demonstrating an Apple iPad version of its Opera Mini web browser at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Opera Mobile claims to be the fastest smartphone web browser and recently announced it has 100 million users. Apple initially prevented the app - a direct competitor to its own Safari mobile web browser - from being distributed via the App Store.
Opera works differently to most web browsers, using a central proxy server. You connect to a central Opera server that caches web pages and delivers them to the app. By caching information and optimising it the Opera web browser can deliver web pages more quickly.

However, it also initially contravened Apple's ban on non Webkit browsers and also there were concerns that it could run external code, also contravening Apple's app store agreement.

An opera spokesperson told us "it's not been approved yet by Apple, but it's awaiting approval. We expect it to be out soon".
