Expect top mobile-surfing users to also take the lead in the use of social networking-on-the-go. This is according to results of a recent study by Opera Software.

Mobile phone users from Indonesia and the Philippines -- two of the countries with dominant users of mobile surfing - are also the top users of social networking using their mobile phones, according to the Opera State of the Mobile Web report.

"More than 77 per cent of mobile Web users in these countries visit Facebook and spend a lot of time socialising with friends online," the report continued. "Facebook is used by more than seven out of 10 users in the Philippines and Indonesia."

The study measured mobile social network habits of Opera Mini users for the month of April 2011. It first involved determining the top social networking sites visited by users in top 20 countries. Then, the study measured the percentage of users visiting the top sites and the page views.

"We see that a significant portion of Opera Mini users choose to participate on social networks," said Jon von Tetzchner, co-founder, Opera Software. "Although each country has its own most popular social network, one commonality is that those who frequent such sites use them heavily, as seen in the page-view statistics described in the report."

The top 10 Opera Mini country users were Russia, Indonesia, India, Ukraine, Nigeria, South Africa, China, Vietnam, Mexico and Brazil. The next 10 were the US, Belarus, Egypt, Kazakhstan, the UK, Turkey, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Kenya and Poland.

The study also noted that aside from Facebook, other countries have their own local favourites for social networking sites. Vkontakte is a favourite in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakshstan. Orkut is a favourite in Brazil, in Poland, in Vietnam and in China.

Facebook page views in Opera Mini account for more than half of all page views in some countries, including Indonesia, Bangladesh and the Philippines in Asia.

Opera Software said users of the Opera Mini browser increased 4.6 per cent to more than 107.1 million in April 2011 from March 2011.
