KUALA LUMPUR, 25 OCTOBER Malaysian mobile firm DiGi Telecommunications (DiGi) has chosen Penang and Sabah as the first two states in Malaysia to have access to its new 3G voice and data service for mobile phones Turbo 3G.

DiGi chief executive officer Johan Dennelind said the company's entry has activated 200,000 existing subscribers in Penang and Kota Kinabalu on Turbo 3G, and expects to have its entire subscriber base in these market centres on Turbo 3G by the end of the year.

Dennelind said this move marks the company's entry into the mobile 3G space. This launch is a key milestone for DiGi as it marks our fulfillment to enable Turbo 3G for mobile phones this year. We now have complete Internet solutions to customers both on big and small screens.

Our strategy to launch Turbo 3G on PCs and laptops [in May] first has allowed us to address gaps in the market and manage our network better, he said. We have received positive reviews from customers on our broadband service particularly our better speeds for less proposition. We aim to emulate key learnings and apply it for 3G on mobile phones.

More people experience the Internet first on mobiles

We are seeing a shift in consumer behaviour whereby more people are getting their first Internet experience on their mobile phones, hence it is key that we give them quality online service to spur usage, said Dennelind. Existing mobile customers will be progressively activated on Turbo 3G without having to replace their SIM card or request for any further settings.

Dennelind added that two plans have been introduced to customers in Penang and Kota Kinabalu. The Internet Unlimited Max 5 tariff which gives all DiGi Prepaid customers unlimited Internet on their mobile phones for no more than US$1.47 (RM5) a day, and the Internet Unlimited Monthly 58 plan for DiGi Postpaid customers which offers broadband optimised for the mobile phone at US$17.07 (RM58) a month.

In addition to voice and video calls, DiGi subscribers in Penang and Kota Kinabalu can now enjoy a greater Internet experience when accessing e-mails, social networking services and various other online applications on the go, said Dennelind.
