Extreme Networks recently introduced a simple and low-cost wi-fi solution targeted at educational institutions and the hospitality market which are challenged by the growth in the number of wi-fi devices.
The "snap-on" Altitude 4511 wallplate access point is a long-range wireless local area network (WLAN) solution designed for college campuses and multiple dwelling units (MDUs). Extreme Networks said the Altitude 4511 is an iPhone-sized device that can be easily snapped on to an existing Ethernet port, and this means less upfront cost to upgrade as the number of wi-fi users grow.
Extreme Networks and Motorola Solutions collaborated to develop the Altitude 4511 which features a
a 400mW radio -- compared to some solutions that operate at 40mW -- boosting the coverage of up to three times. Each long-range device of 26 dBm can service up to 10 rooms at a time, making it possible to cover a 200-unit building in hours, not days, Extreme Networks said.
The access point incorporates secure mobility features from the ExtremeXOS operating system, and radio frequency (RF) and WLAN technologies from Motorola.
