PCCW Global opens point-of-presence in Telekom Malaysia data centre

KUALA LUMPUR, 24 MARCH 2010 -- Hong Kong telecommunications provider PCCW's subsidiary, PCCW Global, has opened a new point-of-presence (PoP) at Telekom Malaysia's (TM) data centre in Kuala Lumpur, which should provide enhanced coverage and new options to customers, said both communications providers.

Through this PoP, PCCW Global will be able to provide a portfolio of integrated global communications solutions for customers with presence in Malaysia, said TM executive vice president, global, Rozaimy Abdul Rahman. At the same time, TM will also be offering its services and solutions via PCCW Global's network.

A POP, which is an access point from one place to the rest of the Internet/network, usually includes routers, digital/analogue call aggregators, servers, and frequently frame relays or ATM [asynchronous transfer mode] switches.

PCCW Global is committed to investing in network diversity in the Asian region and this has been demonstrated by the building of another new PoP in Malaysia, said PCCW Global chief executive officer, Marc Halbfinger.

Last year, we launched the Intra Asia Cable System (IACS), the region's first direct, point-to-point and express optical-fibre submarine cable system interconnecting key PoPs in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore with branch extensions to the Philippines and Vietnam, said Halbfinger.

IACS is designed to avoid potential natural calamity areas in the Asia-Pacific region, he said. The value of this feature was immediately proven when we were able to reroute traffic on the IACS and resume service within a short time subsequent to a major cable break in Taiwan caused by Typhoon Morakot and earthquakes. The resilient design of our network, coupled with the strength of our relationship with TM, will guarantee highest quality performance and service."

We are happy to note that through this partnership, TM and PCCW Global will be joining hands in providing unparalleled telecommunications solutions and services to the increasing demand of customers from corporate and enterprise segments, said TM's Rahman. It will also drive the corporate and enterprise segments particularly in catering to the needs of customers who demand flexible, scalable and future-proof global networking solutions.
We believe this strategic partnership between two major players will further strengthen both companies' positions as the preferred network and communications service providers in the region, he said.
